Youth Day 2010: Where were YOU on 16 June 1976 ?

Volunteer Centre will be hosting Youth Leadership Debates on Wednesday 16th June – participants will include local young people and members of the community who will reminisce about their personal memories of June 16th 1976.   The discussions will be facilitated by local community leaders and will include the showing of a South African film which has become synonymous with the struggle and the role of youth during 1976.

This event forms part of the Volunteer Centre’s campaign to encourage a spirit of community participation and civic responsibility in young people.

These Debates will start at 10h00 on Wednesday 16th June and will be held at:

  • Mitchells Plain – Beaconvale Frail Care Centre   
  • Khayelitsha –  Iyethu Community Centre – F Section, Khayelitsha
  • Beaufort West –  St Mathews Primary School, Newlands, Beaufort West
  • Vredendal -   Vredendal North Public Library

The Volunteer Centre is a not for profit organization based in Claremont, Cape Town.   Satellite offices in:

  • Beaufort West (Central Karoo Region)
  • Khayelitsha
  • Mitchells Plain
  • Vredendal (West Coast Region)

For the past 30 years Volunteer Centre has cultivated partnerships with on a local, national and international level. The Mission of the Volunteer Centre is :

Volunteer Centre’s programmes include -

  • Volunteer Recruitment & Placement (both local and international volunteers)
  • Training Courses in effective Utilization and Management of Volunteers
  • International Cultural Youth Exchange Programmes – which include the hosting and sending of volunteers to various countries in Europe;  Canada;  Mocambique amongst others.
