Volunteer Centre Welcomes the World - 2010

The Volunteer Centre has been welcoming the world into our local communities for more than 5 years. This has been done by mobilizing international volunteers at local projects in various communities.

2010 certainly provides a great opportunity for South Africa to welcome the world as we await one of the greatest soccer events at the start of this decade. Along with the excitement of visiting Cape Town for the first time for most internationals, they are also filled with anxiety of the unknown. Often this anxiety is exasperated by media reports reflecting a soaring crime rate in South Africa.

In our experience in working and mobilizing internationals, we take special time and effort to orientate and prepare internationals for city living, urban mobilization and volunteer projects to mention a few main areas of preparation.

The Volunteer Centre offers this specialized orientation to individual internationals or in partnership with international organisations who send volunteers to Cape Town to volunteer. Some points under these areas which are widely discussed, presented at workshops are:

City Living

  • Information on the community or city the international will be living in
  • Brief but interesting history on the city or communitybeing hosted in
  • Expectations of the international
  • Cultural norms of the community/city etc
