FIFTY young volunteers took to the open fields of Capricorn last Saturday, armed with spades and black bags, in an attempt to revitalise gardens and parks in the area.

"Ordinary People - Everyday Heroes"

The first week of June is internationally recognized as an opportunity to salute the sterling services of volunteers. In South Africa this serves as a reminder to the non profit sector of the critical contribution which volunteers make to essential services in our community.

Thank you letter from Umtha Welanga

"I want to thank the V olunteer Centre for helping Umtha Welanga with office equipment like cupboards and desks, thank you so much! You also gave us a Social Worker assistant to volunteer in our organisation, his name is Sipho Ngqele and he was very good to our organisation.

Volunteers – in their own words

“I work with very intellectually challenged children who have Down’s syndrome, for instance, I have a challenged child of my own, so I feel that I can relate. It’s gratifying to give back to society and see a child grow and prosper.” – Gabrielle Saura, a volunteer at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Toy Library, Rondebosch

It takes three straight lines to form a perfect triangle

(Bella “Boody” Ramos – VSO Volunteer Phillipines)

I was fortunate to be given the privilege to participate in volunteering in an international setting by the (VSO) Volunteer Services Overseas. I took the opportunity to attend in VSO three major trainings & workshops in Manilla, Phillipines, as preparation for my placement at the Volunteer Centre – Cape Town in the role of Program Coordinator. Apart from these trainings, VSO also supported me in terms of medical needs that were provided before my deployment.

Story of a volunteer from the Intergeneration Programme in Mitchell's Plain

This is a story of 2 people who really go the extra mile for the people whom they work with. Elizabeth and “Brother” as he is fondly known are the two volunteers that assist in the running of Beaconvale Seniors Service Centre situated at Beaconvale Frail Care Centre in Mitchell’s Plain.

Story of a volunteer from Mitchell's Plain

I would like to share with you the story of Kate James. An ordinary young women and like so many potential volunteers I meet, an unemployed women trying to find her way into employment again.
Finding employment is a struggle that many Capetonians face but Kate decided to do volunteer work to keep her mind occupied. She walked into the Volunteer centre satellite office, not certain about anything in her life at the time, not certain as to what she would like to do either. I decided to send her to an Educare centre with the words, “Give it a go, perhaps you would like it, but if you don’t, please come back to me and I will find you something else to get involved in.”

Story of a volunteer from the West Coast:

Anna Bock is ‘n 28 jarige dame van Vredendal-Noord. Anna is baie lief is vir kinders, dus doen sy vrywillige werk by ‘n organisasie wat kinders sorg wat geen heenkom het nie.  Die rede dat sy aansoek gedoen het vir die program is sodat sy die nodige opleiding kan baat uit die Office Volunteer Program.
